Citra satelit adalah citra dari Bumi atau planet lain yang dikumpulkan oleh satelit pengamat Bumi yang dioperasikan oleh pemerintah atau perusahaan di seluruh dunia. Perusahaan yang bergerak di bidang ini menjual citra-citra satelit dengan melisensikannya kepada pemerintah atau perusahaan lain seperti Apple atau Google Maps.

Satellite imagery is imagery of Earth or other planets collected by Earth-observing satellites operated by governments or companies around the world. Companies in this sector sell satellite imagery by licensing it to governments or other companies, such as Apple or Google Maps.

Citra satelit tersusun atas piksel. Foto pertama dari satelit Explorer 6 ini menampilkan Samudera Pasifik tengah dan lapisan awan di atasnya yang tersinari oleh Matahari. Foto ini dipotret ketika satelit berada sekitar 17.000 mil (27.000 km) di atas Meksiko pada 14 Agustus 1959.

Satellite images are composed of pixels. This first image from the Explorer 6 satellite shows the central Pacific Ocean and its cloud cover illuminated by the Sun. It was taken when the satellite was about 17,000 miles (27,000 km) above Mexico on August 14^th, 1959.

 

Gambar-gambar pertama dari ruang angkasa berasal dari beberapa misi penerbangan suborbital. Roket V-2 yang diluncurkan oleh Amerika Serikat pada 24 Oktober 1946 memotret satu gambar tiap 1,5 detik. Dengan apogee setinggi 105 km, foto-foto dari misi tersebut dipotret dari ketinggian yang lebih tinggi daripada rekor sebelumnya (22 km).^[1] Bumi pertama kali dipotret dari orbit pada 14 Agustus 1959 oleh satelit Explorer 6 milik Amerika Serikat.^[2] Bulan kemungkinan pertama kali dipotret oleh satelit pada 6 Oktober 1959 oleh satelit Luna 3 milik Soviet yang memiliki tujuan utama memotret sisi jauh Bulan. Foto ikonik bernama Kelereng Biru dipotret dari ruang angkasa pada 1972 dan menjadi sangat terkenal di kalangan media dan masyarakat umum. Pada tahun yang sama, Amerika Serikat meluncurkan satelit pertama untuk Program Landsat, sebuah program untuk mencitrakan Bumi dari ruang angkasa.^[3]

The first images from space came from several suborbital flight missions. A V-2 rocket launched by the United States on October 24^th, 1946, captured one image every 1.5 seconds. With an apogee of 105 km, the images from that mission were taken from a higher altitude than the previous record (22 km).[1] The Earth was first photographed from orbit on August 14^th, 1959, by the United States Explorer 6 satellite.[2] The Moon was probably first photographed by satellite on October 6^th, 1959, by the Soviet Luna 3 satellite, whose primary objective was to photograph the far side of the Moon. The iconic photograph, known as the Blue Marble, was taken from space in 1972 and became very popular with the media and the general public. That same year, the United States launched the first satellite for the Landsat Program, a program to image Earth from space.[3]
