Citra satelit dapat digunakan pada bidang meteorologi, oseanografi, perikanan, pertanian, konservasi keanekaragaman hayati, kehutanan, lanskap, geologi, kartografi, perencanaan wilayah, pendidikan, intelijen, dan sebagainya.^[5] Ada 3 jenis citra satelit, Visible Imagery, Infrared Imagery dan Water Vapor Imagery.^[6]Citra satelit dapat berupa citra pada spektrum cahaya tampak maupun spektrum lainnya. Terdapat pula peta topografi yang menggunakan pencitraan radar dari satelit.^[7] Interpretasi dan pengolahan data yang telah dikumpulkan oleh satelit dilakukan menggunakan perangkat lunak pengindraan jauh.

Satellite imagery can be used in the fields of meteorology, oceanography, fisheries, agriculture, biodiversity conservation, forestry, landscape, geology, cartography, regional planning, education, intelligence, and so on. [5] There are 3 types of satellite imagery, Visible Imagery, Infrared Imagery and Water Vapor Imagery. [6] Satellite imagery can be in the form of images in the visible light spectrum or other spectrums. There are also topographic maps that use radar imagery from satellites. [7] Interpretation and processing of data that has been collected by satellites is done using remote sensing software.

Citra satelit permukaan Bumi merupakan salah satu fasilitas publik yang selalu diperbaharui oleh beberapa negara yang memiliki program satelit. Amerika Serikat dan negara-negara Eropa merupakan salah satu dari beberapa pemerintahan yang berusaha mempublikasikan hasil pengamatan satelit secara gratis demi kepentingan penelitian. Beberapa program satelit pengamat Bumi dapat dilihat pada daftar berikut.

Satellite imagery of the Earth's surface is a public resource that is constantly updated by several countries with satellite programs. The United States and European countries are among the few governments that strive to publish satellite observations freely for research purposes.
