Negara berdaulat merdeka menguasai seluruh permukaan darat Bumi, kecuali beberapa wilayah di Antarktika dan wilayah tanpa klaim Bir Tawil di perbatasan Mesir dan Sudan. Hingga tahun 2013, terdapat 206 negara berdaulat, termasuk 193 negara anggota Perserikatan Bangsa – Bangsa. Selain itu, terdapat 59 wilayah dependensi, dan sejumlah wilayah otonom, wilayah yang dipersengketakan, dan entitas lainnya. Sepanjang sejarahnya, Bumi tidak pernah memiliki pemerintahan berdaulat yang memiliki kewenangan atas seluruh dunia, meskipun beberapa negara berupaya untuk mendominasi dunia dan gagal.

Independent sovereign states control all of Earth's land surface, except for some areas of Antarctica and the unclaimed territory of Bir Tawil on the border of Egypt and Sudan. As of 2013, there are 206 sovereign states, including 193 member states of the United Nations. In addition, there are 59 dependent territories, and numerous autonomous territories, disputed territories, and other entities. Throughout its history, Earth has never had a sovereign government with authority over the entire globe, although several states have attempted and failed to achieve world domination.

 

Perserikatan Bangsa – Bangsa (PBB) adalah sebuah organisasi antarpemerintah di seluruh dunia yang bertujuan untuk menjadi penengah dalam persengketaan antarnegara, sehingga terhindar dari konflik bersenjata. PBB terutama sekali berfungsi sebagai forum bagi diplomasi internasional dan hukum internasional. Ketika konsensus keanggotaan memperbolehkan, maka akan disepakati mekanisme untuk melakukan intervensi militer.

The United Nations (UN) is a worldwide intergovernmental organization that aims to mediate disputes between countries, thereby avoiding armed conflict. The UN primarily serves as a forum for international diplomacy and international law. When membership consensus allows, mechanisms for military intervention are agreed upon.

 

Manusia pertama yang mengorbit Bumi adalah Yuri Gagarin pada tanggal 12 April 1961. Secara keseluruhan, hingga 30 Juli 2010, sekitar 487 orang telah mengunjungi luar angkasa dan mencapai orbit Bumi, dan dua belas di antaranya telah menginjakkan kaki di permukaan Bulan. Keberadaan manusia di luar angkasa hanya terdapat di Stasiun Luar Angkasa Internasional. The first human to orbit the Earth was Yuri Gagarin on April 12th, 1961. In total, as of July 30th, 2010, about 487 people have visited space and reached Earth orbit, and twelve have set foot on the surface of the Moon. The only human presence in space is on the International Space Station. The station's crew, currently six, is replaced every six months. The furthest human travel from Earth was 400,171 km, accomplished by the Apollo 13 mission in 1970.
